The Fish
The Potomac is literally alive with both gamefish and baitfish. Our most sought after prey are the smallmouth and largemouth bass that abound almost everywhere, and which also concentrate in numerous hotspots.
Other species include:
- large bluegill and sunfish
- beautiful walleye (a 15 year old kid recently caught a 4 pounder)
- yellow perch
- tiger musky
- channel cats
- carp
- and the occasional rainbow trout in the springtime.
Teeming baitfish, larvae, worms, snakes, salamanders and small lizards, and various other aquatic, amphibious, and airborne lifeforms ensure a steady and plentiful supply of delicious food for river gamefish.
While we typically spinfish with only artificial lures, preferring to imitate the various creatures along the food chain, fly fishing is also an option for the experienced or novice flyfisherman, and live bait fishing can be arranged. In most cases you'll catch fish all day.
This region of the Potomac valley sees very little fishing pressure, and most gamefishing seems to be catch and release these days, as it is with us. Access is limited, and you'll probably see few other fishermen while you're out.
Although size varies widely, most of these fish are hungry and active, all are strong, and they're just waiting to ambush your tasty offering. These are the fish, and the fish are excellent.
